ROOKIE PROGRAM

We are welcoming rookie swimmers in 2026. Rookies are swimmers who are typically ages 4-7 and can swim a little bit but need to improve their stroke skills and stamina to make it across the 25 meter pool. This option does not replace beginner swim lessons; our coaches encourage the rookies to swim on their own as much as possible and quite a few of our older rookies will graduate to the 8&Under group by the season’s end.

Rookies do not start practice until June 22nd. We do not offer an afternoon rookie practice option. The last day of Rookie practice will be Wednesday, July 22.

Rookies will be in small groups and should have the ability to wait on the wall when it is not their turn. Rookies should be willing to try to swim (even just a few feet) on their own, and be comfortable not having their parent/guardian(s) at the end of the lane.

Many of our wonderful junior coaches and lifeguards also give private swim lessons in their free time. A list will be posted at the gatehouse once the pool has opened.

SUIT UP!

Recommended Gear for Swimmers:

TEAM SUIT
Encouraged, but not required for swim team members.
Team Suit Try-on day will be on Monday, June 6 Home B Meet/Time Trials #2. Rookies need any swimsuit that fits.

Our coaches strongly recommend not using the team suit as the practice suit since it is a lot of wear and tear on a competition-style suit. blue and yellow swimsuit

Women’s Suits – $69.42
Fireflow LightDrop Back

Boy’s Jammers –  $46.80

Fireflow Jammer

Suits are being sold by Sport Fair. Our team will wear the “Navy/Yellow” option. Use the code “virginiahills26” to receive a discount!

Contact the Swim Team Rep with questions.

TEAM CAP
Encouraged, but not required for swim team members.
Available for purchase from Team Rep once the season starts and at the concessions stand during meets. You do not have to have our team cap, but you can NOT wear the cap of another team (including your school) at meets. Neutral caps are ok.

GOGGLES
All swimmers need goggles.
Cost is around $15. A decent pair of competition goggles are a better investment than those found at Target or Walmart and can be found at our team store.

FINS AND KICKBOARDS
All swim team members need fins and kickboards.
Cost around $10-$20 for each.  The team has several sets to share but they may also be purchased from our team store. The same kickboard can be passed between siblings at different practices. We do have some team kickboards as back-up.
